Her Work is Never Done - A Women Photographer's Thoughts on Indian Women
As a young girl, I could see my mother busy with household work all through the day. Once in a while probably she could find some time out from her hectic schedule to supervise the lunch I had after coming back from school. Apart from that it was only at night when I could get my mother's loving touch, noticing her dead tired and muttering the very words - women's work is never done.
In those days, the phrase hardly carried any meaning for me. However today I know what she did mean by "women's work is never done". Busy juggling my career, family, children and other social responsibilities I too at times echo these oft repeated words - and if you are a modern Indian woman reading this blog you are more thank likely to agree with me!
Yes the Woman's work is never done for the role of Indian women is many! As mother, wife, daughter, daughter-in-law and colleague she has myriad roles to play. And, with each role comes the great responsibility of making everyone happy. An Indian woman has to be a perfectionist in all that she does, whether it is looking after the children or maintaining relationship with friends and family. In the 21st century she is the superwoman, an earthly form of the celestial deity who does it all and does it all alright.
The popular phrase 'working woman' is just superfluous, since women are always working whether at home or in the work place. Think of the average Indian homemaker - despite not going to office she has a lot of work to do and needs to take care of myriad details pertaining to the health and welfare of her family members.
And what does she get in return - the answer is nothing! Have you ever stopped to say just a Thank You to your mother or in fact any other home maker who takes care of your needs? Most likely the answer is no. Despite promises of gender equality and tall claims of equal distribution of household labor post marriage - most Indian women even today are caught up in the thankless vortex of household jobs. True! Her Work is never done!
